What are the chances, lucky me

Sunday, May 30th, 2004

I purchase my first car two weeks ago. What are the chances it gets hit two weeks later while being parked/stored in Tacoma while I visit home? Turns out it did, so my car (that I was just beginning to like) is now sitting in a police impound lot while I wait on hold over the phone back at home. Think that’s a coincidence, think again. It appears the driver that crashed into my parked car was not insured. That’s okay as long as you have underinsured vehicle coverage on your cars insurance policy. Last Friday when I flew home I HAD THIS INSURANCE but being the spending conscious consumer I am, I reduced the insurance to a “storage” policy which limits my coverage to comprehensive insurance (covers theft, fire, etc. but not a collision with another vehicle) and greatly reduces my premium. A day and a half after I disabled underinsured property insurance, my car gets hit. But I have nobody to blame but myself (funny thing is, I’d make the same decision again) considering I foresaw an issue like this happening (ask Ricki, maybe I’m psychic). I really have no idea what kind of condition my car is in now or what’s going to happen with this situation, but you are bound to hear more about it on this blog.

Anyway, what fixes a bad day better than a night at the bars’ and that’s what I did. My buddy graduated from SFSU on Saturday and we hopped through a couple of bars on Geary and Clement St. They were okay.

Good Investments?

Continued to research my kiosk device and have chose the back mountable Elo ‘15 industrial CRT touchscreen ($150 used w/shipping included on ebay) and the HiTi 630PL photo printer ($80 w/shipping on ebay). Unfortunately, HiTi does not create Linux drivers for their photo printers, so it looks like the program will have to be developed in VB.net. I was considering the HiTi 640DL “mini-lab” 20lb heavy duty photo printer with double the paper capacity (the less human maintenance, the better) but they cost $700 (would be the most expensive item in the kiosk). It also has a temperature monitoring device which would be useful because I think air circulation might be a problem in an enclosed kiosk. If I were sure that the kiosk would be profitable, the HiTi 640DL would be my choice but since this is only a demo I’ll stick with the cheaper solution. Steve’s Digicam: Photo Printer review gives an excellent review of the various printers. HiTi printers apparently have a per print cost of only 40 cents compared to upwards of 80 cents for competing brands (profit margin!!!).

I also decided on a mutual fund family to use for investment in small cap companies (a gap in my current investment portfolio). The Laudus Rosenberg U.S. Small Cap (BRSCX) funds have relatively low expense ratios, small market capitalizations, and have consistently produced returns in the lower deciles. Currently I’ve been using the Dodge & Cox Balanced and Stock (DODBX/DODIX; I also use their Bond/Income fund DODIX) fund for Large-Cap investment and the Muhlenkamp Fund (MUHLX) for Mid-Cap domestic equity investments and excellent tax efficiency. I also used the Matthew’s Asian Family Funds and the American Century Real Estate Investment Fund and Capital Value Investment Fund (REACX/ACTIX).

Home sweet home

I hopped on a flight home today. Security at Sea-Tac as pretty bad (the worst I’ve seen it since 9/11) but it might have been the time of day (2:30pm) or simply this time of year. It took almost 30 minutes to pass security. Even during peak travel periods, I’ve never had to wait so long but it’s good to be home. I’ve got like 20 episodes of West Wing stored on my TiVo just waiting to be watched (and deleted).

Looks like I’ll be subletting at 1106 in Tacoma this summer :) . Happy 21st Thomas and hope you enjoyed the bars!

A different kind of beach

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

I took a trip to the Oregon Coast yesterday to the city of Cannon Beach. In Oregon terms, I’m under the impression it was a fantastic day for a beach stroll. It was sunny and hot in the upscale commercial district of town but the wind was blowing like crazy on the beach. It’s the first time I’ve been to the Oregon Coast and I can tell why everyone raves about it. Seeing the beach with a virtually untouched forest to the sides is amazing. Too bad it’s not much of a swimming beach. The beach is bordered with vacation rental houses (in a Southern California feel) and the town is full of kite shops and art galleries (in a Monterey/Carmel, CA feel). Ate lunch at the Ecola and had the Halibut fish and chips, excellent.

We headed into Portland for one more night at the bars. Actually we really only went to meet Debbie and went to the Rock Bottom and this taqueria/bar on 23th (or maybe it was 24th) street. Going to drive back up to Tacoma today, hopefully I won’t run into traffic on i5 but before I go, we are stopping for Mexican food served out of the back of a truck.

Internet Kiosk

Tuesday, May 25th, 2004

I’ve been looking into creating my own internet connected kiosk. Don’t really want to explain in detail because someone else might try to steel my idea. A basic search (using google of course) for kiosk’s that simply connect to the internet and charged the user a fee costs anywhere between $3000 – $12000. Kiosk Magazine Online claims that on average, kiosks bring in upwards of $500/month. I think I can make an internet connected kiosk for under $3000 (easily). Home Depot here I come. Linux based touch screen will probably be the way to go.

Homeless for a night

Sunday, May 23rd, 2004

Wow. We took the Max into Portland from the Hillsboro station which seemed like a smart idea at the time. The Max is the light rail system that connects Portland and its suburbs. We got into Portland within 50 minutes and ate dinner at Kells Irish Pub. We continued to hop from bar to bar (Rock Bottom is the only name I remember) for the next few hours. Ran into a couple of UPS alumni, which is always a good time. 1:20am rolls around and we decide we are hungry and go to eat yam fries (excellent, btw) at XV.

Turns out the last Max lightrail makes its run at 1:30am. Needless to say, we missed the last Max by 10 minutes (if only that waiter could have been quicker at giving us our check!!!). Being the adventure seeking, intoxicated, yet logical people we are we devised several ways to return home including walking (30+ miles), hitchhiking, calling AAA (faking a broken car), flirting our way to a bed, or sleeping in a bush and waiting for the morning Max. We attempted the first option but opted for the last, sleeping 4 hours in the luxurious, bark filled, outdoor, absolutely freezing, side yard area of a downtown apartment building. Anyway, we made it back to Forest Grove by 7 the next day.

I’m going to leave you with just one hyperlink. TriMet: MAX Light Rail Service Schedule :)

Devonwood

Saturday, May 22nd, 2004

Saw a dressage horseback riding competition today at Devonwood Equestrian Centre while visiting a friend in Oregon. Couldn’t really understand the difference between the skills each rider performed (it all looked the same for me), but the competition was a first for me and enjoyable. The Devonwood Estate is absolutely gorgeous. The setting is right out of a Hollywood movie and my horse enthusiast says the amenities (for the horses) are top notch. Keeping up the grounds must be a gardener’s nightmare.

Last night I went to the local movie theatre and saw Van Helsing and Mean Girls. Both were good movies but Mean girls was surprisingly entertaining and funny (I’m big into black humor) despite the demographics (mostly teenage girls) of fellow audience members. Anyway, I’m off to Portland to checkout the nightlife.

My experience

Thursday, May 20th, 2004

Problem fixed! plog is this awesome php/sql based blogging software, but apparently it needs at least one post in each section to activate the personalized template. Anyway, problem solved.

I recently (last Sunday) graduated with a Business degree from the University of Puget Sound. Hopefully, I’ll get a professional resume online soon (see the link on the left), but in the mean time, I have extensive knowledge/experience in the Computer/Internet Technology fields. I Started using the internet back in the 6th grade when 2400 baud modems were the norm and version 1.0 of Netscape Navigator was still in beta. Since then I’ve participated in several traditional corporate internships and have also remained self-employed. I’ve been successful with the internet domain gold rush, web and computer programming, and many affiliate/search engine ventures. However, I consider myself more of an internet consultant rather than a hardcore programmer.

If you know of a job, please let me know. Otherwise I might just have to spend the rest of my life traveling :)

A long but short car ride…

Thursday, May 20th, 2004

I took a long but short car ride down to Justin Brook’s house in Forest Grove, OR. Long because the drive is three hours. Short because it was in my new (but used) car that I purchased on Monday. It’s a dark blue ‘99 Audi A4.

I’m actually only posting this because I want to figure out why my personalized templates are not working for my Travel and Business section of my blog, but while I’m at it, I plan on making some longer trips soon. I’m thinking a drive down to Panama or backpacking around South America or Asia…although I hear Turkey is a beautiful place also.

Check out my photo’s section for pictures from my other travel adventures…maybe someday when I get time, I’ll go back and write about em.

First time blogger…

Wednesday, May 5th, 2004

So after about twenty minutes of tinkering with the installation of this blog software, I’m off and blogging; truly impressive. I’m done with school and have a lot of time on my hands, so with any luck I’ll be able to keep this blog updated with things that interest me. Toss me an email if you have a chance. blog@matthewfong.com
